Sly Twine
National Public Radio in the US is running an inspired comp over the next couple of weeks. The challenge is to find the best Accidental Acrostics among the world’s umpteen book- and movie-titles.
Or maybe a song. You could stumble on SLY (She Loves You - by The Beatles). Or SAW (Spanish-American War). Though asking me, the best SAW in the acronym shed has to be Matthew Reilly’s latest thriller - and not the cineplex gorefest - Seven Ancient Wonders.
Will Shortz, who hosts the lively Sunday puzzle segment on Weekend Edition http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?columnId=4473090 also gave listeners a few more examples, including:
CAP - Crime And Punishment
TSAR - The Sun Also Rises
PITH - Places In The Heart
Add to the list a few from my own hobby list:
SOAP - Snakes On A Plane
TWINE - The World Is Not Enough
And I’ve always been amused to see the tag-line below A Perfect Storm can be abbreviated to BOATS (Based On A True Story).
Acrostics. Acronyms. Call them what you will. But there has to be more spectacular BITS (Blister In The Sun - by the Violet Femmes). What accidental acronyms have you found in your reveries? Would love to compile a SLY TWINE list of Fame by next week’s end. So get scavenging, and send in your best.
