Travel Quiz 2

There are two type of people in the universe. Those who want to be travel writers - and the Third World. To help you realise that hotly shared ambition, here’s Part B of the Q&A:

3 Best and worst things?

Waking up on the road, knowing your day will be unique. Even if it’s a trip to the Oaxaca Laundromat – it is Oaxacan. The worst (and best) is the daily journal grind, which I try to maintain in suburbia anyway, just to keep my hand in. Good travel writing is good writing, full-stop. The same disciplines apply. I’m also sick of asking some Kobe sushi chef for a receipt.

4 Tips for beginners?

Theme should be your key focus. Instead of gassing on about Helsinki, find an angle that captures Helsinki. It might be Mobile Etiquette, or Sauna Life. Readers need a slant as much as a story. Take good digital pix (avoiding sauna damage) and immerse yourself in the strange land around you. Learn new words. Eat weird food. Take smart risks. And scribble plenty as you go. Memory is never enough.
