Chiselled in Stone
Cold Chisel sang about the Star Hotel riots of 1979. The pub was a music mecca for the younger set of Newcastle (NSW), and when it shut, there was hell to pay.
Cars burned and police horses bolted. It was anarchy as sponsored by Mr Molotov. Poke your nose into the shabby shell that goes by the same name on the corner of Devonshire Lane and King Street, and you may wonder what all the fury was about.
But the Chisel song alone has enshrined the pub. Any other pubs, places or postcodes around Australia that warrant a rock-n-roll pilgrimage? Blue Sky Mine and Puckapunyal spring to mind, or The Cricketers Arms on Punt Road (Melbourne) where Men At Work first rolled up their sleeves. Where are those secret spots that still reverberate the lyrics?
