YAMBUK, V – The latest seal census declares Lady Julia Percy Island as the largest seal colony in Australia. What’s more, the count registered four separate breeds of seal, with a grand total nudging 20,000.

Such abundant life is ironic for an island once known by local Aborigines as Deen Maar, or the island of the dead. Legends describe canoes launching off the Yambuk dunes, carrying the souls of ancestors.

To venture to the “other side” you can join a charter cruise from Port Fairy to see the seals up close, or stand on top of the 30-metre slide near Yambuk Lake and soak up the eeriness.
