No Island is an Island (P)
PIRRON YALLOCK, V – Take a time-lapse camera to Lake Pirron Yallock, an overgrown puddle west of Colac. Otherwise you won’t believe those islands you see, complete with five-storey trees, are moving around.
The shallow bowl that forms the lake was once a peat swamp. The soil was perfect for spud growing, and even now you may find a few feral tubers in the loam. Between the wars a fire broke out. This and drastic floods served to sever four whole blocks of peat from the basalt floor.
Nearby roadworks guaranteed the swamp would become a permanent lagoon, the blocks fated to float swan-like across the water. Check your filmstrip if you don’t believe me. [17 kays west of Colac]
