EIDSVOLD, Q – After the war against Rommel, George Schafer was told to lead a conservative life and keep on a regular intake of stomach pills. Bugger that, thought George, or words to that effect.

The former dairyman took up fossicking instead, roaming the hills in search of agates, Avon bottles and anything else of curiosity. The ‘invalid’ lived till he was 96, a proud family man, as his bric-a-brac barn goes to prove.

Among such treasures as petrified yabbies and Finnish labradorite is the entire array of his kids, grandkids and great grandkids – George’s other treasures. [Mt Rose Street. Open daily 9.30-3, entry $2, 50c. Phone 07-4165-1311]
