Wing of Desire

Still on matters vertigo (see entry below), the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, outback Queensland, have recently upgraded their 747 tour.

Up till now only flight crew and hijackers have been granted such unqualified access to a jumbo jet - the only such tour in the world - but now your ticket has even longer reach: the wing.

Leashed to a cable, and tricked up in harness, the game visitor can shuffle 50m to the ailerons, then back throught the emergency exit.

Weighing 186 tonnes, the “City of Bunbury” has flown the equivalent of a hundred round-trips to the moon, though landing this baby in an outback paddock in 2000 has to rate among its finest feats.

Cassowary Crossing - the book - has more on that particular miracle, while the Qantas Founders website http://www.qfom.com.au/index.html?PHPSESSID=583714b3c83fcaf1b1bf7eb59f8c11b8 has more on the wing-ding thing, including prices, times and other hangar attractions. Booking are essential for the 747 squiz.
