Enough Rope, You Hope
Ever see that dam scene in The Fugitive? Harrison Ford, as the runaway prisoner, hurtles through a stormwater drain only to encounter a vertical concrete drop. To jump = death. To turn back = Tommy Lee Jones as US State Marshal with gun and handcuffs.
Our Harry opts for death, and survives.
You can too - with ropes and a truckload of gumption - as part of Aardvark Adventures, a Tassie-based thrill-seek outfit that offer the highest commercial abseil in the world. The wall in question is Gordon Dam, a 140m tall parabola, which Aardvark break into three knee-knocking drops.
Bloody hell. I’ve just had a second peek at the dam photo as posted on the website, namely http://www.aardvarkadventures.com.au/php/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=26 and feel queasy all over again. Costs are fair, from $160 onward, which includes the 350km round trip from Hobart.
Aardvark also come at kayaking, caving, rafting and skiing, but the dam drop is (a) unique, and (b) liable to linger awhile in the viscera. [Phone contact is 03-6273-7722 0r mobile 0408-127-714. The website answers most questions. Brown trousers not provided.]
