Please Shut the Pearly Gate

BEECHWORTH, VIC – Behind the Silver Creek Caravan Park is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit Heaven and Hell - in a single trip. Begin your walk from the paddock closest to town, aiming for a pair of wooden footbridges. Cross the upstream one, and keep to the trail between the two creeks. After 400 metres you’ll reach the twin shafts of Heaven and Hell. Gold miners created the granite tunnels to transfer water from Silver Creek to a large sluice hose. Take a torch, and you can wander Heaven, all 300 metres of its dank nirvana. Heaven, of course, is the higher of the two portals, while Hell is flooded to, well, hell. [Beechworth is roughly 270kms northeast of Melbourne, a short drive from Wangaratta.]
